The Steps to Becoming a Pro

Insurance licences are required for the roles of Damage Insurance Agent and Broker as well as Claims Adjuster. Licences are granted by the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF).

Step 1: Satisfy the minimum qualifications

Have you earned one of the following?

  • A specialized college diploma recognized by the AMF: either an Insurance and Financial Advisory Services Diploma of College Studies (DEC) or a Damage Insurance Attestation of Collegial Studies (AEC).
  • A Diploma of College Studies (DEC) issued in Quebec, two certificates of 30 credits each from a Canadian university, a Bachelor's degree, a specialized graduate diploma, a Master's or a Ph.D. degree completed in a Canadian university.
  • Decision issued by the AMF recognizing a level of education equivalent to the Diploma of Collegial Studies.
  • Comparative evaluation for studies done outside Quebec issued by the Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Diversité et de l'Inclusion indicating a level of education equivalent to a diploma of collegial studies or graduate diploma.
  • Secondary school diploma or equivalent level of education and a decision issued by the AMF recognizing at least 3 years of full-time employment experience.

Step 2: Write the AMF's examinations

Need help preparing your AMF examinations? Some Cégeps and the Regroupement des cabinets de courtage d’assurance du Québec offer intensive interactive training to help you prepare.

Step 3: Complete a probationary period (6- to 12-week internship)

This supervised in-context internship is an opportunity to incorporate the knowledge and skills required to become an Agent, Broker or Claim Adjuster.
